Studies have shown that a messy workplace can have various negative effects on the mental and physical wellbeing of employees. As well as looking unprofessional, a messy workstation is the breeding site for various germs and can become a graveyard for productivity. In fact, statistics show that sick days alone cost the UK economy over £77.5 billion a year!

Much of this could be saved if all workplaces were clean and germ-free, and it is easier to do your bit than you think. By tackling the office germ hot spots, you can be sure to stay productive all year long. Read on to learn how to banish those sniffles quickly and efficiently…

Dirty Desks

Some of us work at them every day, and with the rise of hot desks in addition to sharing office equipment, you are at a high risk of being infected by other people’s germs!

  • Regularly clean your desk with specialised products.
  • If eating at your desk, make sure to wash your hands before and after.
  • Have a pack of antibacterial wipes handy to banish cold and flu viruses from shared objects, such as the phone and pens.

Keyboard and Mouse

Studies show that more than 3,000 micro-organisms can be found per square inch on keyboards, and over 1,600 bacteria per square inch on a computer mouse!

  • Eating lunch at your desk? Move your keyboard away to remove the risk of crumbs (and clean up after yourself!).
  • Clean your keyboard and mouse weekly.

Bacteria-filled mug

Hands up if you’re guilty of leaving a used mug on your desk overnight? Yep, us too. Office mugs can look a bit worse for wear quickly, and a simple rinse may not be enough to remove a colleague’s germs.

  • Using your own mug consistently reduces the risks of spreading germs and viruses.
  • Make sure to wash up your own mug every evening.

Mono or Colour?

Colour printers have always been regarded as the more expensive option, but technology has improved and reduced in cost which allows colour printer prices to sit within reach of mono printers. Mono printers are less expensive to buy and run, whereas colour uses four toners in comparison to just one with a black and white printer. This means that the cost per page for colour is significantly higher. However, a colour output looks better and has a larger impact. Using colour makes prospect 80% more likely to stop and read a message!

Multifunction

MFP (Multi-Function Printers) or AIO (All in One) printers are packed full of features – bringing together all the functionality of several machines into one easy to use device … saving time, money and space! They are a combination of a scanner, copier and printer in one machine, available in both inkjet and laser.

Inkjet or Laser?

If you’re printing up to 1,500 pages per month, a laser printer will prove more cost effective, however business inkjets now offer a cost comparable solution and crisper print.
Inkjets are ideal for home use, they typically produce higher quality photographs than a laser printer. Ink cartridges for these printers tend to be cheaper than laser, so you will be saving money when it comes to running out of ink.

Laser printers are designed for frequent use, they can print large batches which ensures processes are productive and efficient. These are best for text documents and high-speed printing. Although toner is more expensive than an inkjet, you get more prints before a replacement is needed. While initial costs may be high, the cost per page works out cheaper over time.

Eco-friendly

Whilst you are sitting at your desk, what can you do to help save the environment? Think about the equipment you use every day! Eco-friendly credentials on printers such as power-saving operation to auto-sleep modes help to control print overheads and create an environmentally friendly office environment.

3D printers

These types of printers have been on the scene for a while but have only just recently made a big impact. Should you be in the business of needing prototypes and small-scale manufacturing these are great for creating a design and testing, before building the real deal.

Wireless Printing

With people working on the go all the time, this is an important feature in modern society. Wireless connectivity allows you to print from a smartphone, tablet or laptop without the need to plug into the actual printer itself.
