Grove Road Primary is a school based in Hounslow for children aged 3-11. Ever since Lyn Gray’s (head) arrival at the school she has been keen to get her hands on the front of house which includes the entrance, reception, staffroom and offices – all spaces that are within the eye of the public. The school was aware that the space was dull, dated and did not create the first impression they wanted. Not only that but the spaces did not allow the team to function properly. We knew that this would be a large task – achieved by stripping the space back and removing all walls to create an empty shell, the team would then be able to design their desired school.
From the initial meeting with Lyn, it was clear that this project would need to cover all aspects if it was to be completed properly. This included partitioning works, decoration works, flooring, electrics, works to the ceiling, washrooms and more. Due to the size of this project our only available time slot to complete this would be over the course of the 6-week summer holiday period. This meant we would have to stick to a tight schedule in order to ensure it was ready for re-opening in September. The space needed to be inviting for parents and children but also somewhere that staff are able to work in privacy or in a more functional space.
Over a schedule of six weeks, we completed the following:
– Removal of existing distribution board & fix of new
– Re-route phone line cables & decommission lighting
– Dismantle of existing partitioning and ceiling
– Stripping out of redundant toilets
– New suspended ceiling
– Repair works to perimeter walls
– Partitioning works – including glass
– Glass partitioning works
– Kitchen & washroom fitting
– Paint/decoration works
– New lighting, plumbing and electrics
After a long six weeks, the entrance to the school is hardly recognisable in comparison to its previous tired and dull appearance. What is most striking about this project is the use of lime green colour which Lyn was keen to use throughout, not only to brighten but also to invite children and their parents. By stripping this whole workspace back to an empty shell, we have been able to start from scratch to create spaces that are more functional in terms of size as well as their positioning and security.
From the first visit, to the end result, we knew TODDS were a company that we could trust and work with. They have a good understanding of the educational sector and what would work. The team made several visits to site before construction started, each time assuring us of what the process was and introducing us to the team members. The end result is better than we imagined, and we couldn’t be happier. We will continue to work with and seek advice from TODDS and we happily recommend them.Lyn Gray Headteacher
