Humberside Airport is an international airport located in North Lincolnshire. Originally a Royal Air Force base, it now operates flights via airlines such as KLM, TUI and Flybe with the head office of Eastern Airways also being located here. It was known to the airport that the departures lounge here was dull and dated which gave them the ideal opportunity to attract some new business by refurbishing the lounge. They were looking for an alternative solution to the standard rows of seating we are used to see when travelling abroad – a space that was inviting and also multi-functional.
After our initial meeting it became obvious that not only was the space in need of new furnishings, but the facilities also needed an update. This included the bar and kitchen services as well as the public toilets and gate desks. As the majority of passengers here tend to travel for business purposes, the airport wanted to make this an environment suitable for remote working and that also offered some level of privacy. We decided to promote this through looking into ‘Den’ working units which would allow customers to hook up their electricals and continue working out of the eye of others in the lounge. In addition to this, we located the more bar and bistro type seating away from these areas to divert noise.
Over a schedule of seven weeks, we completed the following:
– Construction of kitchen area & plumbing works
– Construction of bespoke bar unit
– Rip out & fitting of flooring
– Decoration works
– New ceiling & lighting
– Rip out of all toilets
– Fitting of new vanity units, flooring & tiling in toilets
– Installation of furnishings
It was key to the airport that the space remained open throughout this period and so we had to produce a plan of works where we worked around flight times – sectioning off parts of the lounge and working throughout the nights.
With the help of our team of joiners, designers, flooring fitters, decorators, project managers and installers we were able to produce a welcoming area that now fits in with the airports branding. The space includes large areas of soft seating, bistro seating, high level seating, power units and booths with the aim of reaching out to all types of passengers that may pass through the airport.
TODDS worked really hard to pull this project off, working long hours and throughout the night as not to disrupt passengers. Our efforts have really paid off and I couldn’t be prouder of the team.Shane Beesley, Director/Project Manager
