Five Reasons Why Your Workplace Needs an AED

Five Reasons Why Your Workplace Needs an AED Five Reasons Why Your Workplace Needs an AED

It can be an uneasy eventuality to consider, a collapse in the workplace, something we all hope we never experience. Yet, a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen to anyone of any age, at any time, and having quick, easy access to a defibrillator (AED) can mean the difference between life and death.

When used in conjunction with immediate CPR, an automatic external defibrillator increases the chances of surviving an SCA by up to 70% and can be used by anyone in the time leading up to an ambulance arriving. Chest compressions and rescue breaths alone are rarely enough to restart a heart, which is where an AED comes in. Here are five reasons why your workplace needs one:

  1. SCA Can Happen Anywhere, at Any Time

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when an electrical malfunction of the heart causes it to suddenly stop beating. If someone suddenly collapses without warning, is unresponsive and unconscious, accompanied by seizure-like movements and absent or abnormal breathing, chances are they’re experiencing an SCA.

  1. The Closer You Are to an AED, the Better

Having access to an AED within 3 to 5 minutes of collapse leads to survival rates of up to 70%. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 7-10%, so having an AED within easy reach can make all the difference. If your workplace is large, spans several floors or buildings, you will need enough AEDs to account for the time it takes to reach them.

  1. Do You Know Where Your Nearest Public AED Is?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide “adequate and appropriate” equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure that employees receive immediate attention “in the event of injury or sudden illness at work.” Despite AEDs becoming increasingly visible in public places, they’re still not a legal requirement in the workplace. Could you retrieve your nearest public AED within minutes?

  1. Demonstrate a Commitment to Safety and Wellbeing

Having an AED on site sends a message that you take employees' and visitors' safety seriously. Peace of mind positively influences morale, fostering a supportive work environment where employees feel valued and cared for. When we feel secure in our surroundings, we are more likely to be focused, productive, and engaged.

  1. Anyone Can Save a Life

The AEDs we supply provide step-by-step instructions to support you throughout the rescue. Real-time feedback technology guides rescuers on the optimal rate and depth of chest compressions through voice, text, and visual prompts, ensures the correct application of pads, and automatically delivers a shock when needed. Whilst it can benefit your first-aiders to learn the ropes, truly anyone can operate an AED in an emergency.
